When It absolutely, positively, has to be destroyed overnight... U.S. Marines. Had a shirt that said that, wore it all the time.
I joined the National Guard instead (Territorials, for you Brits). Still in after 9 years and did one year in the 'Stan. I'm proud to be serving, and proud of all those that served before. Our current wars are hell because of the lack of front lines, fighting an enemy with no uniform, and having to try to limit the number of civilian casualties to appease the media.

Thats the best shirt ive ever seen anywhere, ever. But seriously that is pretty cool and i couldnt agree more on that last line. its bullshit and its taking a toll as well

i'm currently in the ARMY. been in for a little over 2.5 yrs, already did a stint in afghaniland. thats actually where i found and joined sharenator. kinda sucks as far as the current wars go. personally i'm getting fed up with the new bullshit my chain of command is pushing. and with the whole downsizing.

i'm still waiting for the government to stop being stupid and just go in and kill the fuckers that keep killing us.
that village elder they told you not to shoot cause it would be bad for the press? he's the one pushing the button and blowing up truck 2 and killing 3 guys you've known for a year or so...

    • February 8, 2012, 8:32 pm
man i couldnt agree more about killing them. fuck what the media thinks, its war, not a fuckin lunchin. its fucking stupid and im sorry that you have had to deal with that shit. And also *virtual hand shake* because youre awesome bro.

I have to wonder, why even waste the time and resources in the country if they barely let you fight back? I understand not wanting to start unneeded confrontations or trying to forge allies but like you said, some of these elders are no better than the Taliban. (Assuming they aren't directly allied with them.)

im an airborne infantryman in the army... been in for 5 1/2 years, was in iraq 08-09 and in afghanistan right now... be prepared to deal with alot of bs, shit that makes absolutely no sense, and idiot assholes in charge... but you will also make lifelong friends that go beyond just normal friendships... if or when you deploy, you are likely to see some shit that will be hard to forget, like watching your buddy burn alive in a humvee while you're stuck in the middle of a daisy chain and cant get to him, or watching them blow their own people away in a marketplace and having to clean it up afterwards. that being said, the bonds that are formed are like none others you will find in the civilian world, and it will change who you are fundamentally and professionally, in most cases for the better. you will learn a lot, see a lot, and do stuff that 99% of people will never experience or understand. i congratulate you on making the choice to serve, and pray that you stay safe when you cross the pond to the sandbox. the reason for the war doesnt matter, the only thing that matters is the person to your left, right, front, and rear... you'll learn, you dont have to like it, you just have to do it... one more thing, dont take anything that your NCO leadership says personally, just fix it, learn from it, and drive on. a thick skin will get you a long way...
    - DeviousCow February 9, 2012, 10:44 am

I respect the soldiers for being soldiers, I do not approve of the current war as I find it to be an absolute waste of resources and lives, I feel that we need to realize that we are not the world's police force and instead act more diplomatically than militarily, and we need to withdraw troops from places that they have no purpose being anymore and divert them to help deal with the problems along the Mexican border.

0341 of the USMC here. I don't regret joining for one day but I'm telling you, you have no fucking idea what you're getting yourself into. That is unless you're just gonna be some silly POG and sit at a desk till you get out.

I commend the bravery of soldiers, unless they choose to obey orders that they know are morally wrong.

Im not saying go all hitler, just not holding hands. "Morally wrong" is pretty vuage. sry, worded it a little harsh. :P

Hitler was a god damned hero if I ever saw one.

He could of been a great man if it wasn't for the fucking Japanese attacking the Americans.

America would of never got involved with the war in Europe if it wasn't for the fucking Japanese.

I fucking hate the Japanese and the Jews.
    - MalverdeAl100 February 28, 2012, 11:04 pm
That's not really the point of military discipline Ertrov. Your commanding officer tells you to do something, you don't get to argue about morality. You sign away your right to bitch and moan when you enlist.

That being said, I have absolutely no interest in joining the military or supporting the war
    - CrazyJay February 29, 2012, 7:49 am
I hope you're referring to the actual Tea party from the American revolution and not the idiots with the funny hats who worship Glen Beck.
    - CrazyJay February 29, 2012, 7:58 am
    ^^^ this.

but legally wrong is different, or if it violates your chosen religion you can choose not to do it. your chain of command might make your life hell because of it but they cannot take any "formal" action against you for it.
    - MIKYTEY February 29, 2012, 9:36 am
    what the fuck?
    - Vans February 29, 2012, 10:42 am
killing over 12 million innocent people makes a good hero?
what classifies as a bad person in your eyes?
or do i smell a troll?....
    - Fail4424 February 29, 2012, 4:31 pm
    Yes, the real one.
    - Ertrov February 29, 2012, 7:12 pm
Any organization that requires you to give over your conscience isn't worth joining.
    - Ertrov February 29, 2012, 7:13 pm
I'm not saying I approve, but it is what it is. If your conscience matters that much don't enlist.
    - CrazyJay February 29, 2012, 7:51 pm
And how do you know that they were innocent? Besides i'm pretty sure it wasn't as much as 12 million and even if it was that amount it's not like he killed them all personally. There's really no such thing as bad people in my eyes. Why do you ask so many questions?
    - MalverdeAl100 February 29, 2012, 9:24 pm
    What the genuine fuck, man.
    - Ertrov February 29, 2012, 11:43 pm
"Soldiers! Don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and enslave you; who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder! Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men---machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have a love of humanity in your hearts! You don't hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural." -Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator
    - Ertrov February 29, 2012, 11:45 pm
Adolf Hitler personally believed that people with blue eyes and blonde hair were superior, and that everyone else should be slaughtered. After his rise to power, he ordered the concentration camps to be built, designed to use undesirable humans as slaves, which would then die (either from starvation or gas chambers) and then their bodies were used to make soap and lampshades. He attempted to take over the entire world through military force, and would have killed every man, woman, and child who wasn't blonde with blue eyes, if he could have.

He was a horrible, despicable excuse for a human being.
    - Ertrov March 1, 2012, 1:31 am
Guy did what he had to do, if it wasn't him it would be somebody else. Germany was going through a tough time. Besides anybody with artistic skills such as his can be forgiven.
    - MalverdeAl100 March 1, 2012, 1:38 am
    - Ertrov March 1, 2012, 1:42 am
    What's that?
    - MalverdeAl100 March 1, 2012, 1:47 am
As a 5th generation vet, I can tell you I was never asked to to anything that was unnatural. To say any of the armed forces wants mindless machines shows how little you know about the armed forces. Just take the army slogan, "Army of One."
Nor did I have to give up my conscience to be an officer in this mans army. What I did have to do when I volunteered was trade in a set of laws that apply to the citizens of this country to the set of laws that governs the military. So many people seem to forget that you are no longer a citizen when you join the military. None the less when my time was up, I was given my citizenship back.
    - johnecash December 7, 2012, 3:45 pm
Sorry Ertrov. You're wrong. I do exactly as the people in charge of me tell me to do and the Marines under me do exactly what I tell them to do. That's what keeps Marines and soldiers alive. You don't ever think, "why do I need to do this?". You just do it. You trust the Marines in charge of you and you'd follow them to the death and if anyone in my team, squad, platoon, or company ever did do anything that is absolutly wrong I would lie to till the day I died to keep him out of trouble. 99.999999999999999999% of the time when Marines or Soldiers do something that is wrong in combat it wasn't because they were bad or evil people. They were either obeying orders or just trying to do everything possible to make sure the best friends they would ever know for their entire life didn't go home in a casket draped in an American Flag.
    - Jofus1992 December 8, 2012, 3:01 am
Do you know nothing of the Nuremberg Trials? If you do, then you have answered your own question.

I'm an anarchist, and I'm against every gov't, and all military forces in the world. I'm against capitalism, communism, and socialism. I'm for people doing things for the good of people, out of the good of their hearts, and I say that there shouldn't be any entity telling people what they can and cannot do.

i swore in on the 17th of this month. and remember this, there is no peace without war.
    - exile February 28, 2012, 11:48 pm
So say all the big wigs that run every single gov't in the world, they want to wage war, sow fear, and reap the rewards of hundreds of thousands of people dying. In all honesty, I've been wanting to start an anarchist experiment on a 100 square mile plot of land, and be completely independent of every government.
    - Lambeau February 28, 2012, 11:56 pm
    good luck with that.
    - exile February 29, 2012, 12:04 am
if you buy your land from the gevernment with that in the contract you should be able to. but if you do anything outside those 100miles they can make it hell. require a passport or arrest you. or wage war against you... all governments do that to people who annoy them. good luck man, i'll try not to be one of the ones that get sent to deal with it.

I respect and support all US military personnel. My family comes from a military background throughout the ages, stretching back to the Civil War, and perhaps further but I don't have any evidence of such. The choice to serve and be proud of yourself and your country is not a light one and I respect that. I would have served but unfortunately physical health prevented and still prevents me from doing so.

As far as wars go, I do support them where they are justified. That becomes the gray area. And to prevent fights and arguments and so on I will simply say: Afghan - yes, Iraq - no. It's my personal opinion and that's all.

However the quality of life is far better in the private sector.
