That song just pisses me off. It paints our veterans as evil baby killers. Now i do understand that there have been instances of cruelty and horrible things done it is not the norm.
    - Jofus1992 September 29, 2010, 6:11 am
its more to illustrate how a good man can be turned into an evil one by the horrors of war and that we should work to stop war
    - Tremp20k September 29, 2010, 10:50 am
    turned evil?

When it talks about pulling the man out of the house in that song. What it doesn't mention is how he is responsible for hundreds if not thousands of deaths.

And of course we should work to stop war
    - Jofus1992 September 29, 2010, 12:04 pm
yes evil, the word is used to often in a grand sense simple misconduct to other people and animals is evil. I may sound like a politician but just because one committed evil does not mean we drop ourselves to that level. That is what we are begging to do in this war with what we are, or were, doing to prisoners. Their misconduct must be stopped but we cant lose our values while doing it
    - Tremp20k September 29, 2010, 3:01 pm
I think it's more to show the damage war does to soldiers. He does unspeakable acts but he does them from the stress of war and the belief in his country. Even at the end when he returns and says his flag is gathering dust but it's a flag that he loves. He was pushed past the breaking point and suffered for the country that he loves. It's to highlight that war is a horrible thing that destroys people. It shows that the soldiers on both side are required, or certainly feel they're required, to do things they would never normally do for their patriotism. Both the things he does he doesn't want to do. Like the girl walking towards him that he kills because of war

I don't know how clear that all was as i was just rambling
    - Dannyl September 30, 2010, 2:47 am
The "damage" war does to people is highly over-publicized and hollywood-ized. (i know i just made up words but i hope you know what I meant.) Yes some people do suffer from mental problems from war. My father served in Panama, the First Gulf War, and the second Gulf War. He also went back to iraq as a civilian later to do some more fighting. I will go ahead and tell you he has killed people. He told me he thinks about it every day almost because he knows that was someone's child, someones brother, someones friend. But he also remembers that that person was trying to kill him and his friends. Its not like war is just this dehabilitaing(I may have made up another word) thing that fucks you up for life.

One more thing, never judge a person in the military or a cop for wrongdoings based on information in hindsight. Always judge on what information that they had at the time.
    - Jofus1992 September 30, 2010, 4:09 am
Oh i know what you mean exactly. But my point was that people like your father, and the people he fought, have done things that they wouldn't do because of war. Some people aren't as affected by this as others are. Some people though destroyed by the experience
    - Dannyl September 30, 2010, 5:49 am
Well yes. It's just made to look like it's more common than it really is.
    - Jofus1992 September 30, 2010, 11:48 am
Yeah i see your frustration, but remember that this is art and art takes it's inspiration from the exceptional, not the mundane.

Basically, it'd be a boring-ass song without a bit of drama xD
    - Dannyl September 30, 2010, 12:11 pm
I guess your father was a little older when he killed someone but this song is about a young soldier
    and he kills a civilian
    not on purpose
so I think if you kill a mother that didnt want to harm anyone it is pretty disturbing
your father killed people that tried to kill him I think it is another situation
probably the song also wants to illustrate the dying of civilians during war and they had nothing to do with all this stuff they just live in this country and cant do anything about it

I saw them live and before playing the song he was talking about that war is senseless and we should kill each other and stuff
but even if you kill someone that tries to kill you or even would kill civilians it could mess up your life
modern war is a bit different
but my grandfather fought in WWII and every night he woke up screaming and he never talked about anything that happened to him in war

Why do Americans think this is something to be proud of?
Do you really want the rest of the world to fear you? Fear leads to hatred, not respect!

Just think: If the USA could go back 20 years, and start spending this much each year on education and scientific research, you could have colonised Mars by now.

    Agreed, sir.
    - Logos385 September 26, 2010, 9:44 pm
honestly America gets a really bad rep allota the conflicts we are in were really started by the French and British they destabilized most of the world with their colony building and America being the dumb asses we are tried to go in and fix in a decade what i took those countries a century to fuck up
    - Tremp20k September 27, 2010, 1:38 pm
That may be true about many past conflicts, but recently it has been ALL us. Even against opposition from other countries, we have pressed on. But let's not turn this into a war/anti-war discussion. I think we can all agree that America's military spending is sky-high. Whether or not that is a good thing remains to be seen : ). That is all : ).
    - Logos385 September 27, 2010, 5:47 pm
Like Iraq and Afghanistan? The Korean War, Cuba, Panama, the Dominican Republic, antagonising Israel, funding the Taliban in Afghanistan, and bringing them to power, then going back 20 years later to fuck them up...? I guess we should blame all of these on the British and the French too.

List the things America is most known for:
    -Rock 'n roll
    -Fat people
    -Rap music

I wouldn't thank them for 3 out of 4 of these, and I certainly wouldn't be proud of them.
    - GarnStickit September 27, 2010, 6:07 pm
America's defense spending is sky-high. But if we are going to spend a shit-load of money defense would be the thing to spend it on. All the other stuff doesn't really matter much if the Soviet Union had invaded.
    - Jofus1992 September 29, 2010, 6:28 am
Actually spending more money doesn't necessarily mean things will get better.
    - Jofus1992 September 29, 2010, 6:37 am
Why are we proud of it? that easy we like the fact that we can take care of our self.
    - johnecash September 29, 2010, 10:10 am
Yeah, I would rather have good defense then better education. I mean, maybe if they took a third out for education, thats till a lot of money lol.
    - Porsche91109 September 29, 2010, 11:03 am
So you're not too grateful for us colonizing the Americas???
    - Math September 29, 2010, 3:17 pm
alright do you realize military spending is what advances many things in society. do you use gps? if it wasnt for the military you wouldn't have it. almost all of the advancements are because of military spending.
    - buddyfoeva September 29, 2010, 5:10 pm
well said. many pieces of technology that you take for granted today are due to Uncle Sam fitting the bill.
    - johnecash September 29, 2010, 7:00 pm
    Who's uncle sam?
    - Goober September 29, 2010, 8:15 pm
The people who colonised the Americas weren't American.
    - GarnStickit September 29, 2010, 10:15 pm
You can take care of yourselves?...

Worst education system for a developed country (non-third world country).
    Record highs for unemployment.
    Your economy is virtually bankrupt.
Highest prison population in the world.
Highest number of murders in the world.
Highest rate of gun-related crime in the world.
Weakest public health care system for a developed nation.

Twice as many people have died in the recent conflicts in the middle east than died in the September 11 attacks in 2001. And it's still not over.

Yeah, you can really look after yourselves!

If you didn't burn so much money making the rest of the world hate you, then you might actually have something worth protecting.
    - GarnStickit September 29, 2010, 10:42 pm
well honestly it lends to the bad track record with English colonies look what we did lol yet another rebellion

    - Math September 30, 2010, 2:35 am
I'm going to assume that you're serious but he was referring to the US govt. but just your govt if you don't live in the US.
    - Jofus1992 September 30, 2010, 4:00 am
I only have one thing to say about your list. Most of the prison population is due to drugs most of it being marijuana and such. oh maybe I have two things the U.S. has some of the best colleges in the world so you cant hate about all of the education here.
    - buddyfoeva September 30, 2010, 5:21 am
If we didn't burn so much money making the rest of the world hate us? How have we made anyone hate us? It would appear you seem to hate the US.
    - johnecash September 30, 2010, 6:14 am
The United States has, for a long time, spread its ideology through military might. They wish to show their superiority through military power, and inspire fear in "those who would do us harm." This is the very definition of terrorism.

Terrorism is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion. [First line on Wiki definition of Terrorism]

Every country that they've coerced into disarming has been invaded shortly thereafter (by the USA). Why would any country want to put themselves into such a position of weakness? The United States has put itself in such a strong military position that the only defense that a lot of these countries think they have left is to build nuclear weapons.

Do some reading. Not everyone loves America. 95% of the Americans I have met believe that everyone in the world loves Americans. You're utterly delusional.
    - GarnStickit October 1, 2010, 6:19 pm
Actually many Americans know the rest of the world hate us we don't say they don't. But The one thing I have to say is that someone has to be the person at top keeping everything in control. for a long time that was England. There would be a lot more wars if one country wasn't a superpower. I'm not saying it's right but it prevents a lot more then it makes
    - buddyfoeva October 1, 2010, 6:23 pm
Are they public colleges? No, they are for the wealthy, privileged and gifted.

Your school system is utterly pathetic. You really ought to be appalled!

Note: "oh maybe I have two things the U.S. has some of the best colleges in the world so you cant hate about all of the education here."

    - Capitalisation is necessary at the start of a sentence.
    - A comma should be used to separate clauses.
    - Can't requires an apostrophe.
    - The use of the word about, is incorrect.
    - You also need to look at your sentence structure.

    Should have been:
*Oh, maybe I have two things. The U.S. has some of the best colleges in the world, so you can't hate everything about the state of education here.*

Your education is letting you down.
    - GarnStickit October 1, 2010, 6:35 pm
It didn't prevent the "terrorist attacks" on September 11 2001.

All I'm saying, is that America has painted such a huge target upon itself, it's just a matter of time until someone unleashes 911 times 2,356.
    - GarnStickit October 1, 2010, 6:45 pm
How many times has the U.S. been attacked? I guess your from England or something?
    - buddyfoeva October 1, 2010, 6:56 pm
hang on is this a paper for something??? okay in formal writing this is necessary but not on some little chat on the internet man. do you hate it when ppl tlk like this? huh do u? sry man wouldnt want u to not like my grammer and all of this other shit.
    - buddyfoeva October 1, 2010, 6:57 pm
I don't hate you, or your language skills. I don't particularly care how you write. I just pointed out the poor state of the American education system, and you wanted us to believe otherwise.

If you truly want to convince me that the American education system is not seriously FUBAR, then post your above comment again, without the spelling and grammatical errors.
I'll even give you a few hints, just to get you started, the rest is up to you.
    - Hang on, is this a paper or something?
    - Capitalise the start of sentences.
    - Grammar*
    - GarnStickit October 1, 2010, 10:44 pm
Personally, I don't believe America was even attacked on 911, but that's entirely other issue. North Korea genuinely are testing nuclear weapons, and they do identify America as their greatest "threat."

How long before we're at the centre of another American stirred shit fight?
    - GarnStickit October 1, 2010, 10:53 pm
Yeah I'm not sure about that either. Those buildings came down so straight it's not even funny. However Bush was in office and I believe he could of did it to finish what his dad started.
    - buddyfoeva October 1, 2010, 11:53 pm
Just because the best schools here are for more wealthy people doesn't mean less fortunate people go there. The U.S. still has good colleges I know this as a college student. I know how to use grammar and all of this. (Don't correct me right now I have been drinking right now and am buzzed so don't take this into account. I will not post that comment again however because I did it on purpose and did it to make a point and now it's over.

    - Math September 29, 2010, 9:34 pm
I'm almost certain you wouldn't win any war. At least by yourself. China could take just about anyone they wanted only because of the amount of people they have
    - buddyfoeva September 30, 2010, 5:17 am
no way man, this little island hasnt been invaded since 1066 and it will definately stay this way

    - Goober September 30, 2010, 6:44 am
im not saying it wont but if a country like the U.S. or Russia china or India wanted to invade it they could. Not saying it wouldn't be hard but they could just because of the amount of people and resources. If it was just England vs. anyone of those countries by it self i wouldn't see much of a chance for you. But hey we don't have to worry bout all that so it's cool
    - buddyfoeva September 30, 2010, 5:32 pm
I'm not saying that we would win, but the issue is, is that we're an island, so if someone did try and invade us, you could only really attack via boats or air, which could make things a bit more interesting.. Unless there were missiles... We're screwed if there were missiles.. But yeah, because we're an island it's be kind of difficult. Plus, we have the Scot's on our side. Fuck your missiles, planes and boats, we have pissed Scot men in skirts :D
    - SuDoku October 2, 2010, 9:11 am
the biggest problem with a modern non-nuclear war with Briton would the island nations does not have enough natural supplies to feed a war machine. thats why the US was so vital to Briton during WWII. It does not matter how good your guns are without bullets. it does not matter how good your planes are without gas. A retired 2 star marine core general one told me at my military college, amateurs plan strategy, professionals plan logistics. i just wonder how much national reserves the Brits have for war. how long could they hold out? the answer...until supplies ran out. read your histoy, even the most bad ass of forts have been over taken, not always by guns but by blockade.
    - johnecash October 2, 2010, 10:15 am
I know that, that's why I put that I never said we would win, I just mentioned problems that other places may have. I know from my history, which I studied, that we'd be screwed if it came to a siege situation, which is the main disadvantage to being a island nation. I'm not even getting started on the WWII subject XD
    - SuDoku October 2, 2010, 10:18 am
that being said as far as i know any country that ever fucks with Brition will have the might of the US armed forces fucking them UP with in the hour. Briton as far as i am concerned is a cousin of the US. As such you are family. Any one who fucks with our older cousin is going to have to deal with US, a much younger but bigger cousin. Some of the best people i have ever met were the royal marines who i served with. only other group i have met that can hold their own when it comes to a drinking contest with a marine.
    - johnecash October 2, 2010, 10:23 am
Oh that'll be the Scottish and Irish arm of the British, as far as I'm concerned as English, I'm a lightweight haha. All jokes aside, as an ex- cadet, some of the best people I've met have been armed forces personnel, they're actually genuine people.
    - SuDoku October 2, 2010, 10:26 am
